5 common Furniture Arranging Mistakes in a Living Room

People love decorating their dream home. But invariably we make hasty calls that can ruin the overall feel of the interiors. Is the rug too large for the small room? Fewer lights in a huge living room? So on so forth.

If you’re designing from scratch or pondering over redesigning your living room, we are listing 5 common mistakes that you must avoid.

Without any delay, let’s begin…

1. Too much may not be sufficient

A cramped room does not make for a comfortable living.

As per minimalisms, “ less is more”. The basic premise is to keep things simple and not creating a cluttered space.  Though this phrase was first used in a poem in the 19th century, this principle stands applicable in modern architecture.

coffee table

Stuffing too many furniture items can negatively affect the flow of the space and make it hard to move from one corner to another.  An oversize bed, coffee table, a dresser, a sleeping couch, television set, and so much more.

Putting everything you need in one small room can be suffocating. Maintain a comfortable distance between your furniture items and create a balance in the interiors.

2. Misplaced size of the furniture

How often you scale your furniture before setting them up in your living room? Many flounder on this and hence creates a poor balance in the room. A furniture scale helps to envision how it will look when placed in your room.

rough measurement

Do a rough measurement of your furniture such as beds, dressers, and even area rugs. And compare the dimensions with that of your room to get a fair idea of how everything will pan out afterward.

3. Matching furniture is no longer a rule

A popular faux pas is having matching furniture in your living room. While there is nothing wrong, create a new dimension by using a mix and match of your furniture.

sofa sets and chairs

For instance, use contrasting colors in sofa sets and chairs. Have blinds that set the theme right and not just match with all other furniture items.

4. Pushing furniture against the walls

Having your furniture placed against the walls create an illusion that your room is huge. Nothing wrong in creating extra space in the center but that may look odd if you don’t have a focal point in the room.

The empty or dull space in the mid of the room can be off-putting for the interior design and overall aesthetics. Strike a balance between the size and position of the furniture.

5. Poor Light

Poor light can be off-putting. Who would like to enter a dull and darkroom, after all, right?

Smartly install the lights to create the perfect mood for the room. Having too many or few lights can be uncomfortable, and unsettling.

For instance, you can have a task light next to your Eames style lounge chair for reading late night or wall-mounting overhead light to scatter the light throughout the room.

Consider the size and the interiors to decide the number and type of light lamps and ceiling fixtures to create a perfect ambiance.

The bottom line

You don’t have to be an expert interior designer to decide what’s good or not good for your living room. Do not blindly follow the popular interior design rules; what works for others may not do the trick for you.

So, create your own balance in the interiors that speak of your lifestyle and personality.
